An eternal flame was added Friday to the O'Fallon (Mo.) Veterans Memorial Walk during a ceremony commemorating recognition of Americans who remain prisoners of war or missing in action.
Officials estimated that more than 500 veterans and residents attended the event, which Mike Kerman, the keynote speaker, said was important as a reminder that some of America's soldiers still are not yet home.
Kernan, a Marine veteran and former police chief in O'Fallon, said the flame and the nearby POW/MIA flag were important symbols "to remember those for whom the final bugle has not yet blown."
The ceremony was held on POW/MIA Recognition Day and the lightning of the flame marked the first addition to the memorial since it was dedicated in November 2001.
The city's veterans memorial known simply as The Walk, sits on a 1.7 acre site south of Interstate 70 at Veterans Memorial Parkway and Belleau Creek Road. The memorial features five marble blocks, each bearing an insignia of the five branches of the armed forces, and bronze boots.
O'Fallon Mayor Paul Renaud said representatives from his city met with officials from St Louis early Friday to transport a flame from the Soldiers Memorial downtown to O'Fallon.
"The flame, and all it stands for, has given us an unusual opportunity," Renaud told the crowd.
"We have found, ladies and gentleman, a new open door. My hope is that today's event will move regionalism another step forward," he said.
The city's Board of Alderman in August awarded a $13,900 contract to Larry Pogue, a Navy veteran of Washington, Mo., to design and supervise the flame project.
"Artists work from life experiences," said Pogue.
"Looking at the Olympics and seeing the torch they use there was in the back of my mind somewhere," he said
